Forrest Fenn’s treasure
Millionaire adventurer and art collector Forrest Fenn filled a chest containing gold nuggets, rare coins, jewellery and gemstones worth over $1 million after he was diagnosed with cancer in 1988.
He survived the illness but buried the chest somewhere in the Sante Fe mountains. Clues to the location can be found in Fenn’s memoir The Thrill of the Chase.
Lake Toplitz gold
In the last months of the Second World War, Nazis were said to have dumped wooden crates filled with millions of dollars worth of gold, diamonds and other treasures in Lake Toplitz, Austria.
Many divers and treasure-hunters have died searching for the gold, which is thought to be still lying on the lake’s floor.
The Golden Owl
In 1993, French author Régis Hauser released On The Trail of the Golden Owl under the pseudonym Max Valentin.
The book is a real-life treasure hunt with a final prize of a 15kg golden owl. Hauser estimated that the prize would be found within a year of the book’s release, but 23 years later it remains unsolved.
The author died in 2009 and did not reveal the statuette’s location. Before he passed away, he confirmed that he had visited the burial site and noticed digging nearby, meaning that somebody has come close to finding it.
Treasure of Lima
After Spain defeated the Incas and took control of Lima in the 16th century, the Catholic Church amassed a huge treasure.
But in 1820 the Spanish were facing a growing war of independence, and the decision was made to evacuate the city and its fabulous wealth.
The crew in charge of moving the treasure turned pirate and buried the treasure on Cocos Island, where it is still said to remain.
The haul is thought to be worth more than $200 million and contains a life-sized gem encrusted statue of the Virgin Mary, around 200 chests and hundreds of gold and silver bars.
Dutch Schultz's hidden fortune
Dutch Schultz was an American mobster who amassed his riches through organised crime, bootlegging and rackateering.
Before his death in 1935 Schultz allegedly commissioned an airtight and waterproof safe, which he filled with around $7 million in cash and bonds and buried in the Catskills mountains in New York.
Each year treasure hunters meet at the mountain range to search for the safe, but it has never been found.
Blackbeard treasure
The famous pirate Blackbeard is said to have accumulated a massive fortune of stolen gold which was lost after his death at sea in 1722.
Although his ship Queen Anne’s Revenge was found by archaeologists in 1996 near the coast of North Carolina, treasure-hunters believe there is still a massive fortune lost at sea.
Treasure of San Miguel
In 1715 a fleet of 12 Spanish ships departed from Havana, Cuba filled with silver, gold, pearls and jewels.
Seven days after departing 11 of the ships were lost in a hurricane near Florida, killing the sailors on board and losing the treasure.
Seven of the lost ships have been discovered but the bulk of the silver is thought to be on the San Miguel, which remains missing.
